Three days ago I landed in Kona on Hawaii. On the one hand I was annoyed by the wet and cold weather on the other hand I had the plan to meet Patrick there and celebrate christmas together. I experienced so much within this three days that it feels like I have been here for week. Let me start at the beginning.
I left the “airport” without any clue where to sleep tonight. (It consists of some cabins and a security gate. The landing field is modern.) “What am I going to do next? Oh, the exit sign. Well, lets follow it.” As soon as I reached the highway a bus stopped, the door opened, bags were flying out and a young man followed. “How is it going? – Wanna hitchhike? – Where do you have to go? – On the other side of the island? – Pahoa? Thats were I have a property!” thats how I met my first travelmate Andrew. He bought a 0.5 acre property for the ridiculous cheap price of 13,000$ at Black Sands and is living there in a treehouse (The properties inclusive house are even cheaper right now because of the flowing lava). He is growing his own food and a moringa tree. You can use the three from the bottom to the top. It is useful for lots of things and can grow almost everywhere and is therefore known as the miracle tree. (If you want to know more check out this documentation: : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cqwk9KFLTI )
We hitchhiked some kilometers but when we realised that it is 12:30pm we decided to sleep on the site of the street on a construction site.
The boss of the construction company showed up at 7 the next morning with his truck and told as friendly but determined that we are trespassing. He understood our situation from last night but also meant to not do it again.
Back on the road – Stick up the thumb. A truck was stopping after a short time and the driver told us that he is going all the way to Hilo. He pulled out when suddenly strange noises were coming from the engine and we had to get out again. Damn, and now nobody is stopping anymore.
Two women were coming down the road walking their dog. “Your are those two guys who were camping next to us on the construction site, aren’t you?”. We explained the situation briefly again and apologized once again for trespassing. “That did not bothered us. We were worried that you get run over by the heavy machines which they use there sometimes.” Shortly after they even came back with the car and a gave as a huge lunch pack with lots of food and water. – I was overwhelmed by so much kindness. Waiting for another hour was not that bad after that. A car stopped. Oh hey, the guy whos truck died 90 minutes ago, now with another car. Dexter is at the end of his 50th, constructor with 80 employees and lives in Kona right at the beach overlooking the start and finish of the Iron Man. “Here is my number. If you ever back in Kona you can stay at my place. I always have people around. Sometimes up to 10 people.” He was pointing on buildings during our journey saying: “Look there, I built that.” – By the way, his girl friend is a multimillionaire, he once celebrated New Year’s Eve with Alice Cooper and other celebrities, stopped two bank robberies and jump from a cliff to escape from an attacking bear cutted off his arms while doing so and had to walk back to his car for hours, bleeding like hell. This was only one of several stories of his six years in Alaska where he faced death.
While riding down the road we passed Mauna Kea and some lava fields. It is a really imposing landscape.
From Hilo we went to Pahoa. At first to Tonys’ because Andrews friends Tenner how had Andrews car keys is also living there. But he was not around. So I met Tonys two children who were shy at the first moment but at the end almost clinging. Tony is a manager of Pono Express, a medical taxi company and he coordinates the drivers from home or the beach – thanks to the smartphone.
Tenner called that his moped broke down and we have to pick him up. Andrew finally found the car keys after a short while of searching and we hitched again to the center of Pahoa, briefly talked to Tenner and then we went on to Black Sands to Andrews property and truck. He showed me his property and was happy that this time nobody has stolen anything like the last time. Then we went to Robert at his workplace, a fruit processing factory and asked for a battery-jumper-cable for Tenner. We talked for half an hour with the workers and instead of the cable we got Rob to pick up the moped.
On the way back I was wondering how I actually should meet Patrick (my german friend). He said he will be somewhere in downtown Pahoa around 3. This was not really precisely and it was already 5 and so I doubted to meet him today. – We quickly loaded up Tenners moped and went on the way to Tonys’ – and there was Patrick, walking on the side of the road. In Vanocuver we watched the funny movie “Ein Tick anders” (A tick different) together. The next days we shouted the Tourette-Swearings from Eva in the movie at each other and that continued for a while. – So I shouted “Kinderficker!” (child molester) out of the window and he knew immediately what was going on. So we also picked him up and went back to Tony. Ich went into the house to grab my stuff when Tony asked me: “Do you know where you are sleep tonight now?” – “Nope, no idea” – “You can crash here for a night, I don’t mind” – And thats how we got our first accommodation.
We hitch hiked to the Leilani Estates the next to grab the rest of Patricks stuff. His friend Erik, they met each other in Iceland and they came to Hawaii together, joined us spontaneously when he heard that we want to go to the beach.
We stopped at Uncle Roberts. It is a place where a market takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Here we met Bapo. A traveller from Tibet and he joined us also. We went to Kehena Beach together. A (mostly) nude beach. At the beginning it felt a little bit abnormal but because no one was around the shyness was not that big. I also manages to body surf for the first time on the waves what made a lot of fun.
Tony invited some people for the evening and we had nice evening together.
