ArrowsmithHasta Alaska, Beaches and North Frisian on Mt. Arrowsmith

I went on from Ucluelet to Qualicum Beach and Parksville.
After a relaxing afternoon at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, I drove toward Hornby Iceland the next day. At the tourist office in Qualicum Beach I made a stop to get a map of Hornby Iceland.
When I left  I spotted a VW T2 Bus with Chilean license plate which I had seen the day before. Now I was curious and wanted to know what it is all about. The owner Ben Jamin was just sitting in the car. He is an Englishman, and on the way to Alaska. If might become jealous reading my posts, so I felt the same listening to him.
He bought his bus in Chile, built it up and is now for already 3 years on the road. He has experienced incredible stories, which he records with a camera and publishes as well. Meanwhile, he has around 35,000 followers on YouTube and some support him now financially. He is accompanied by his dog Alaska. He offers his bus for couch surfing. This means, complete strangers can ride with him for some  days and sleep in his bus. It can sometimes be quite cosy. If you are interested now, you should definitely check out  his YouTube channel: Kombi Life
The North Frisian Bende with his VW Bus T4 showed up in the evening . I met him at the hostel in Tofino. So we all slept in our cars on the beach in Qualicum Beach.

I really went on to Denman and Hornby Island the next morning. To get to Hornby Iceland you need to take the ferry to Denman Island, cross the island and take a second ferry at the other end. Thus you have to take three ferries and one can truly say that the island is very remote, which for some residents, the argument was probably the reason to move there. The vibe has reminded me of Hawaii. All are very relaxed, helpful and pretty alternative.
By car, the trip costs so much that I decided to leave my car on Vancouver Island and cross over the two small islands (12km from shore to shore) hitchhiking.
In the afternoon I reached the Tribune Bay Beach, the most beautiful beach I have seen so far in Canada.
I slept in a small cave on the beach – what a crazy idea. I was freezing half the night and had four hours fitful sleep. Shortly before 6 I went to see the Helliwell Provincial Park. I had heard that this is supposed to be beautiful and I should see this absolutely. Well – after the Juan de Fuca Trail, the park was here pretty lame. Only the low sun was particularly and has plunged the forest in a fabulous light. While walking along the coast I saw  a high mountain on Vancouver Iceland and thought. “I have no idea how it is called, but I have to climb it, the view is breathtaking determined”.
I stayed until noon on the beach. A second night in the cold, I did not want to experience and so I went back to hitch to the ferry. The elderly couple that drove me could also tell me that the high mountain is Mt. Arrowsmith.

In the evening I met Bende on Qualicum Beach and when we had dinner at the pizzeria he was immediately interested, when I told him that I would like to hike to the summit of Mt. Arrowsmith the next day .
We could not find the entrance to the base of the mountain and had to ask in the tourist information center in Port Alberni. Then we knew why we have not found the way: 10 km of gravel road.
The Judges route, the route to the summit is only 3 kilometers long. However, it is nearly 1,000 meters in order to overcome to reach the peak in 1819 meters. That means one has an average gradient of 33%. The view from the top lets you forget the whole exhausting hike. How it is to climb that and how wonderful the scenery is, you can see here in the video.

We were with 2 friends from Bende In the evening. Two Englishmen with whom he plays football.
After an evening with lots of alcohol and a hung-over breakfast in the overpriced dinner ,Bende and I drove  to the Englishman Waterfalls  again to jump from the cliffs into the water. The 5-6 meters we still have done. The 10 meters from the bridge was a little too tricky for us.
Then it was time to say good-bye because I wanted to get the evening ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver. The ferry arrived with much delay and so I enjoyed a game of Frisbee with a few unknown people in the parking lot. Once again I was incredibly lucky because I was the last car, which was allowed to get on the ferry. The rest had to wait another 2 hours. I stayed in a side street behind Vancouver which I had interpreted as very quiet. I was so mistaken, because the next morning every five minutes a truck left the low loader truck depot next to where I had parked.
No sooner I reached Kelowna I had written with Richard from the vineyard and after 5 minutes had my old job back and it went  to work the next morning.
Since Hornby Iceland I hardly got more than 4-6 hours of sleep and the following night I could not sleep at all. I got up at 5 and was at 6 at work. It was Canada Day. Clarissa asked what I wanted to do that day, I said that at first I have to sleep since I am awake for 28 hours and then she offered me their air-conditioned second bedroom where I then stayed for 2 full nights to catch up on my sleep.
After 3 hours of sleep, I went back to the hostel and from there to Downtown to meet with Clarissa and her friend Amanda. The beach was full of Canadians in red and white and the Canadian flag on the cheek, so well as I.
There was a grand fireworks over the Okanagen Lake In the evening.

The next day, Miriam journeyed to Alaska because she had met a very interesting Quebec during my absence. Actually a road trip was planned with her through the Rockies but now I have to look for a new travel companion. Probably karma stroke because I had canceled the road trip with Jenny some weeks before.

Speaking of karma. Yesterday I was with Clarissa in Penticton for Ribfest. Actually nonsense for someone who does not like ribs. In addition, the far too expensive meat was just mediocre.
Good that James has played next door with his band “My Kind Of Karma” otherwise the whole trip would have been a little disappointing for the long ride.
